NaNo Prep and The City of Arches

10/21/2014

In less than two weeks, National Novel Writing Month starts up again, and this year, technically I'm a NaNo rebel. I will not be starting a book from scratch. I will be using NaNoWriMo to give me the discipline I apparently need to finish the first draft of The City of Arches. I still intend to write 50,000 words in the month of November, so technically I'm sticking with the purpose of the challenge, but I am not writing an entire book from start to finish next month. I have set up my novel page on NaNoWriMo's website, and have posted my "official" synopsis of the novel. What do you think?

"Princess Sitnalta has always been curious about her mother. All she knew of her had come from stories told by her former governess, and the current Queen, Aud. All this was about to change.Coming across a room in the castle, Sitnalta finds herself surrounded by a veritable treasure-trove of information. Surrounded by her mother's belongings and letters, Sitnalta is sent on a trip into Learsi's past. Learning about her mother's history with the enigmatic wizard Kralc, and their trip to the dangerous City of Arches, Sitnalta unlocks the truth about the mysterious coin, and about the person the former Queen really was."

I honestly hate writing the mini blurbs describing what a book is about. I don't like having to boil down a plot into a couple of measly paragraphs. But basically the gist of the story is a prequel/flashback tale that takes place when Sitnalta's mother is a young woman and is a bit of an adventure story. I always knew where the magic coin came from, and the back stories of all my characters. I look at this book as my chance to really set it all down. What do you guys think? Knowing the fates of some of the people who will be in the book, does that take away from any suspense that may build? Or is it interesting to know how things all came to pass?

The Dybbuk's Mirror, and L.I.F.T. The City Artfest

So, it's been a crazy month. The Dybbuk's Mirror is finally out and available for purchase. So far, the response to the book has been very good, and I am thrilled about how it turned out. Night Life has also come out, and you can get it as an ebook on Amazon. I have some other news that I am extremely excited about. An and I have been asked to participate in L.I.F.T. The City ARTFEST. This is an event taking place on October 26 from 10-4 at the Maja Prentice Theatre in Mississauga. The proceeds from this event go to an organization called Women's Money. This organization is a financial health club for women, and the event's theme is "Girl Power". We will be there with some other fantastic authors, comic book artists, cosplayers, musicians, singers, and artists. It looks to be a lot of fun, and it's for a good cause! If you can get to Mississauga that day, be sure to check it out!

More information can be found on the event at LIFTTheCity.com and you can read about Women's Money at womensmoney.ca

Our next even looks to be SFContario5 from November 14-16 at the Ramada in Downtown Toronto. (Hopefully by then we will be in a Ford free city. Thus ends the politics section of this blog. :p) There, An and I will be participating in panels, and just having a grand old time. I love doing these cons. The people there are amazingly fun, and we get to meet so many great people.

The past few weeks have also seen a plethora of holidays. My family and I just celebrated Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur. The kids are finally old enough to understand why we celebrate and do what we do. We are about to go into the holiday of Sukkot. (One year I will have my way and we will build our own sukkah in the backyard.) Even though we don't have our own, I took the kids to our synagogue, and they participated in the decoration of theirs. One thing I keep forgetting: Handing a trio of three year old children a jar of glitter is a recipe for disaster. I am still finding it in my hair!

Now that the holidays are over, I will definitely be updating here more often. I promise!
