So, there has been quite a bit going on around here. I can honestly say that I am not a fan of nursery school. I love all that the children are learning. They adore going through their ABC's with me, and are so proud that they can spell their names. They're working on writing their names on their own, and it's almost legible. This Mother's Day, I was so excited to give cards actually signed by the kids to both grandmothers. However, I dislike nursery since it seems to be a veritable Petri dish of all sorts of infectious diseases, and when one child gets sick, we ALL get sick. I watch the first victim and take note of each and every symptom and pain I know I'll be experiencing by the end of the week, if not sooner. This past week is was house-wide strep throat. Delightful. The only good thing about being sick is the time I get to write. Can I say how excited I am that the fourth book in the Sitnalta series now stands at 42,238 words? I am SO excited about this one. It feels very different than what I've written before. In other news, my cover for The Kingdom Thief is going to rock! I had a meeting with the artist, and I am so excited about what it's going to look like. Can't wait to be able to show it to everyone! Anyway, this weekend will be my first time as a panelist at Anime North in Toronto. So if you're downtown, stop on by! Details are here: animenorth.com See you there!

Are you saying you can write while you're sick? I go completely immobile and mindless with the first sniffle . . . But about panels--it looks like yours was a success. I think paneling, if you can get enough folks in the room, is really effective. People like being in conversation with writers, perhaps more than just being read to.

When it comes to being sick, unless I feel like I'm at Death's door, I can write. I find it gives me a real escape so that I can almost trick myself into believing that I feel better.

I so wish I could be in Toronto! I hope it went well. And I hope the strep has passed. I would say I sympathize, but after 14 years of public school teaching, I have the immune system of steel. But I do remember the costs of building it up--I caught everything that came through for the first three years. Hope all is well, and keep on writing.

Thank god the sickness has (mostly) passed. I wish it were possible for things to pass us by, but the kids just do not understand how germs work. It's like they're magnets for sick people. They just want to make everyone feel better, even if it means they get sick themselves.

Congrats on being a panelist at Anime North. What did you have to say? I'm curious about how your new book is different from your previous writing. Can you enlighten us, or should we wait for the book to come out? Thanks for the post.

Well, what I can say is that this new book focuses on a character I've been wanting to explore more for a while. In this one, Sitnalta feels more like a supporting player as others take a more leading role. I really enjoyed playing in their sandbox for a bit.

This is true. Words do seem to come slower, but I've found that some of my most creative bits of writing happen there. It's what happens when you can focus on this, and this exclusively.

I'm with Laura on being sick and not able to do much except click the TV remote and whine. You, however, are a writing machine and I bet there are very few circumstances in which you would not be able to write well. I'm curious about cons versus book fests. Have you found one to be more successful for you than the other? If so, which one and why?

I could never write when I'm sick...heck, I can barely do anything when I'm sick. Just ask my wife -- I'm pretty much the biggest baby there is when I come down with even the slightest bug.
